Dear Parents and Families,
We would like to share a concern that has surfaced recently about a television show that some of our students are watching. The show, now available via Netflix, is called 13 Reasons Why. It is based upon a book, Thirteen Reasons Why. Thirteen Reasons Why includes very serious subject matter including suicide and rape. The show is produced by a former Disney actress, this may contribute to the show reaching a younger audience than intended.
The trailer and advertisements for the series can be misleading. Young people and teens could perceive that suicide is a viable option and the series romanticizes this topic. The content is extremely graphic with troubling scenes in each episode which may be difficult for the viewer to watch and process.
Concerns regarding this series include:
As parents and guardians, we all face the challenge of keeping a watchful eye on our teens and the experiences they may encounter including the information they may access via the TV and online. As you may know, online and cable TV are not held to the same regulations and ratings as broadcast TV. Various organizations have drafted talking points to assist parents and teachers in talking to youth about suicide as it unfolds on 13 Reasons Why . Here are some talking points
As always, our school mental health team and guidance staff are available to assist you regarding this important issue and for any other reason if you have a concern regarding your child. For community based resources, dialing 211 (24 hours a day/ 7 days a week) is available - the caller will be connected to licensed mental health staff. If you have a safety concern about an individual causing harm to self or others, 911 should be accessed as you know.

Congratulations to our Interact Club for receiving the 2014-15 Presidential Citation for extraordinary community service. The attached photo shows some of our club members receiving this award from Dr. Mukund Nori, the District Governor of Rotary District 7980; which serves the four southern counties of Fairfield, New Haven, Middlesex, and New London. It is important to note that the NBIS Interact Club is the only middle school chapter, in the four counties, to receive this prestigious recognition for 2014-15. Congratulations to our advisors, Joan Williams and Danielle Ducharme, for the wonderful job they've done with coordinating our Interact Club activities. Their commitment to community service continues to inspire our students... a job well done!
