SUMMER READING 2010

Dear Parents,
The Language Arts Department of North Branford Intermediate School believes that reading is an important leisure activity that has many academic and personal benefits. In an effort to encourage our students to use some vacation time in this pursuit, we are requiring a developmentally-appropriate summer reading activity.

Your child is expected to read at least one book-length work of fiction or non-fiction. To determine your child’s reading interests and assess strengths in writing, the LA teacher will assign a writing task related to the summer reading selection during the first full week of school.

It is also strongly suggested that children read a wide variety of genre including magazines, newspapers, and Internet sites dealing with such school-related topics as science, math, geography, history, art or health.

The following sites provide book lists with titles appropriate for middle level readers:  http://www.clpgh.org/kids/booknook/gradedbooklists/middleschool.html

http://www.librarycareers.org/ala/alsc/alscresources/booklists/MiddleSchoolReads.cfm
http://www.phschool.com/curriculum_support/reading_list/middle_school.html
Specifics of the project:
1. Select and read at least one book-length work of nonfiction or fiction (novel).
2. Fill out a 3”x5” index card with the following information:

• FICTION: Title of book, author, and a short summary referencing main character(s), setting, major conflict (problem), and resolution (outcome).
• NON-FICTION: Title of book, author, and a short summary including information about the who, what, when, where, and why of the topic.
3. Submit the index card to the language arts teacher by September 6, 2010.
4. Complete an in-class writing prompt related to your summer reading selection as directed by the LA teacher.

The Language Arts Department has compiled a list of authors of Young Adult Fiction as a guide, although students are not limited to these.  Additional recommendations can be sought from local librarians.
