2019 Spring Benchmarks & Testing Schedule

4/5/2019

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As we approach the end of our school year, the final i-Ready benchmarks and the Smarter Balanced Assessment will soon be upon us.  These assessments provide the school and district valuable information which help gauge overall student learning, identify knowledge gaps, reveal student needs, and inform curriculum development/instructional design.  Results from these assessments are also used as data points in making determinations for certain course/class placement (i.e. Algebra, HS level Spanish I, AST grouping, etc.) for our students.

I have listed the different testing dates below for your review.  As an FYI, we adjust the school schedule on testing days in an effort to minimize the loss of academic time.  As was the case during our mid-year benchmarks in January, the entire school is able to test simultaneously. This fact allows for both a lesser number of total testing days and a decrease in the loss of academic time.  The testing dates are as follows:

  • Tuesday, April 9, 2019: Writing (grade-level prompt, hand-written)
  • Tuesday, April 23, 2019: Mathematics (i-Ready, computer-based)
  • Thursday, April 25, 2019: Reading (i-Ready, computer-based)
  • Thursday, May 2, 2019: Next Generation Science Standards Assessment (8th Grade Only)
  • Tuesday, May 7, 2019: CAT Math, Smarter Balanced Assessments
  • Thursday, May 9, 2019: CAT ELA, Smarter Balanced Assessments
  • Tuesday, May 14, 2019: PT Math, Smarter Balanced Assessments

Each listed assessment occurs during the morning and will be composed of two (1-hour) sessions, with a scheduled break in between.  Students are allowed and encouraged to bring a healthy snack for consumption during the break time. Additionally, in-ear headphones or earbuds are needed for the i-Ready assessments.  Students are encouraged to bring in their own earbuds, but these will be provided by the school, as needed. Finally, all students are expected to bring a book to read, should they complete the benchmark early.

Please make every effort to ensure that your child is in school on all of the testing dates and encourage your child to try his/her best on these important assessments.  It is always advisable to make sure your child gets a good night's sleep and eats a healthy breakfast. As a reminder, NBIS offers a daily breakfast program in the cafeteria until 7:30 on a daily basis.

You are welcome to contact me if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Keith O’Rourke, Principal
